Macao currently has 4 public and 6 private higher education institutions, including integrated education-based and research-based universities, multidisciplinary polytechnic institutions focused on applied education, as well as professional institutions that focus on training tourism and exhibition and meeting planners, gaming specialists, paramedics, and other management professionals.

Even though Macao's modern higher education institutions have a relatively short history, they have developed and flourished during the past 30 years, attracting an increasing amount of non-local students.

At the same time, in recent years, over 50% of local high school graduates stay in Macao to further their education. Macao's higher education institutions are attractive to both locals and non-locals alike.

The University of Macau (UM) is an international public comprehensive university in Macao. It ranks 193rd in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024; 26th in the Young University Rankings 2023; 37th in the Asia University Rankings 2023; 1st in the Associação das Universidades de Língua Portuguesa; 254th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024. Its Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Clinical Medicine, Psychiatry/Psychology, Biology & Biochemistry, Social Sciences (General), Agricultural Sciences, Economics & Business, Environment/Ecology have entered the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI)—an international ranking of top academic indicator in the U.S. UM offers over 100 programmes of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree. The university has a team of high calibre faculty members from around the world and English is the main medium of instruction. Furthermore, UM’s residential college (RC) system provides a platform for knowledge integration based on the university’s “4-in-1” model of whole-person education. This is unique among higher education institutions in Macao. There are currently ten RCs at UM. As a complement to the university’s faculty-based system, the RCs serve as a vehicle for whole-person education through systematic planning of experiential programs, with the aim of nurturing students who are successful in their studies and of high moral character. Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) is a public tertiary institution in Macao. We offer practically oriented degree programmes in an extensive range of academic areas at Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral levels targeting the needs of Macao's economic and social development while upholding our education principle of "rooted in Macao, backed by the motherland and facing the world". We take pride in our long history of educational provision and vocational training, nurturing professionals who now excel in the fields of technology and innovation, health and medicine, sports science, language and translation, arts, culture and creativity, public administration, social services and business administration. We house a number of research centres and academic units to promote high-level innovation and development in industry, academia and research. We are committed to our student-centred educational provision and are dedicated to quality teaching. For many years, MPU has been the most popular choice among local secondary students for university education.

The Macao University of Tourism (UTM), established in 1995, is a public institution of higher education in Macao that offers degree programmes and professional training in tourism and hospitality, and is under the supervision of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government. UTM is a full-fledged higher education institution. Apart from bachelor’s degree programmes, it offers master’s degree programmes (including postgraduate diploma programmes) and doctoral degree programmes as well as professional training in a wide range of tourism-related disciplines such as hospitality, tourism business, heritage, events, retail and marketing, leisure and entertainment, sports and recreation, creative and cultural studies, and culinary arts. UTM also delivers various programmes at the executive level in partnership with leading tourism schools in the world. The university is entrusted by the local authorities and other institutions to conduct policy level research related to tourism planning and development. UTM ranks 12th in the world and 3rd in Asia in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2024: Hospitality and Leisure Management.

The Academy of Public Security Forces (ESFSM) is one of the higher education institutions in Macao under the jurisdiction of the Secretary for Security of the Macao SAR. It is mainly responsible for offering bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Prison Safety, Protection and Safety Engineering to officers of security forces and security departments. Moreover, it can organize master’s or doctoral degree programs independently or in cooperation with local or other regions’ higher education institutions which are academically recognized. Finally, it offers formal training to officers in various security forces and departments, providing them with conditions for acquiring professional knowledge and physical training.

Founded in 2000, the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is the largest comprehensive private university in Macao and is authorised to confer on students the doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degree. It offers students a wide range of disciplines, including Social Science, Science, Engineering, Law, Management, Business, Medicine, Pharmacy, Tourism, Art, Communication and Language. The university ranks among the top 300 in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024; 26th in the Young University Rankings 2023; 35th in the Asia University Rankings 2023; and among the top 250 in the Global University Employability Rankings 2022. Disciplines such as Engineering, Computer Science, Biology & Biochemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Clinical Medicine, Social Sciences (General), Molecular Biology & Genetics have entered the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI). There are three state-level research platforms at MUST: the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, and the National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments in Macao.

CityU Macau is also one of the local examination centres to provide a wide range of international English examinations, including TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, and Level 4 and 6 College English Test (CET4 and CET6).

Founded in 1996, University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is a private Catholic university in Macao, China. It is rooted in the long tradition of “College of Saint Paul”, the first higher education institution established in 1594 (at Ruins of St. Paul's, Macao). USJ continues to promote creative dialogue between China and Europe on cultural, scientific, ethical, philosophical traditions and gradually develops into an academic body that blends Chinese and Western cultures. Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) is a private higher education institution that aims to train nursing staff. It adheres strictly to the educational philosophy of “From People to Benevolence”, actively promotes holistic nursing education with care as the core and trains nursing professionals for Macao. It offers bachelor's degree in Nursing and other nursing-related diploma and certificate programs and also cooperates with relevant institutions in nearby regions on offering master's degree and various specialist programs.


Macau Institute of Management (MIM) is one of the higher education institutions recognized by the Macao SAR government. It has always been committed to cultivating applied talent and promoting close cooperation between industries, academia and research institutes. It currently offers bachelor's degree programs (four years), associate diploma programs (two years), professional diploma programs (one year); each with five majors including: Accounting, Facilities Management, Banking and Financial Management, Human Resources Management and Management. A blended learning model is launched in response to the needs of social development to increase the flexibility for students in completing their value-added goals through professional learning. Enrolment for all programs takes place throughout the year and the school year starts in March and September every year.

Macau Millennium College (MMC) is managed by a group of experienced and senior scholars who have been wholeheartedly cultivating international-level talent for Macao, enabling them to take charge of the country. The College adopts the self-created "day and night complementary" format, that is, "two class times, the same teaching content", which is its advantage. Students can choose to attend classes during the day or at night to accommodate those who need to work shifts. The College has many internationally renowned professors, mainly from the University of Hong Kong, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, etc. In addition, the College also has close cooperative relationships with different universities and research institutes outside Macao, e.g. cooperating with the Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Macao economic projects.


Many Unique Programs to Choose From

Currently, there are more than 300 higher education programs in operation in Macao, covering 9 academic disciplines and 36 types of professionals. In response to the historical and industrial uniqueness of Macao, the local programs related to the fields of tourism, gaming, Portuguese language, and translation have gradually developed their respective system and characteristics over the long course of educational practice of the local institutions. In addition, the establishment of National Key Laboratories has driven the development of the programs in the areas of traditional Chinese medicine and microelectronics.

Academic year of Macao's higher education usually lasts from September until July of the following year. It is separated into a first semester (September - January) and and a second semester (February - July) with a summer break in August. Some research program admission times may not conform to the set semester periods.
