Macau currently has 4 public and 6 private institutions, a total of 10 higher education institutions, including universities that combine comprehensive and research, or universities that focus on education and application, as well as those that focus on cultivating tourism and exhibition talents, gaming industry professionals, professional nurses and College for senior management talents.
Although Macao’s modern institutions of higher learning have a short history, they have developed vigorously over the past 30 years and attracted more and more foreign students to study in Macao.
At the same time, more than 50% of Macao’s local high school graduates have studied in Macao for higher education in recent years, which shows that Macao’s higher education institutions are equally attractive to both foreign and local students.
In addition to having close ties with the mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore due to geographical and cultural ties, Macao's higher education institutions also have close ties with the European Union, especially Portugal, due to historical reasons. They carry out cooperation projects every year, and also have close ties with the Americas. We also maintain close contacts with institutions in other countries and regions around the world.
At present, Macao has signed cooperation documents in the field of higher education with the Ministry of Education, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and the Portuguese Education Department. In response to regional cooperation mechanisms such as the Pan-Pearl River Delta and Guangdong-Macao, Macao has carried out cooperation in the field of higher education with relevant regions. various cooperations.
In recent years, Macao has actively maintained contact with international quality assurance organizations. The SAR government has successively joined three international higher education quality assurance organization networks, including the International Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (INQAAHE), the Asia-Pacific Quality Assurance Network (APQN) and the United States International Higher Education Quality Assurance Group (CIQG) under the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). By joining international organizations and participating in relevant activities, we will strengthen mutual connections and cooperation, and learn from experiences from around the world to promote the development of quality assessment of higher education in Macao.
In addition, Macau’s higher education institutions are also actively building internal quality assurance mechanisms and participating in higher education evaluation. For example, Macau Polytechnic University, Macau Kiang Wu College of Nursing and Macau University of Tourism successfully passed the British Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency’s certification from 2014 to 2016 respectively. Evaluation at the institutional level. The civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, and accounting courses of the University of Macau, the computer science, accounting, and Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese translation courses of the Macau University of Science and Technology, and the business administration and accounting courses of the Macau University of Science and Technology have all passed the academic evaluation. Appraisal or obtain professional certification. The tourism management-related courses of Macau University of Tourism, Macau University of Science and Technology and City University of Macau have obtained the "TedQual" quality tourism education certification from the United Nations World Tourism Organization to achieve the goal of improving quality and increasing the acceptability of the courses. At the same time, the Macao SAR government is working hard to build a quality assessment system for higher education, while continuing to approve new courses launched in Macao and conducting regular inspections of courses in operation to ensure the quality of the courses.
