Explanation of terms:

VR: Virtual Reality (abbreviated to ‘VR’) is also called Virtual Technology or Virtual Environment. It is a three-dimensional virtual world simulated by computers. It provides users with simulation of sense of vision, which enables them to feel like of being personally on the scene. They can observe the objects in the three-dimensional environment timely without any limitation.

AR: Augmented Reality (abbreviated to ‘AR’) is the technology that enables the virtual world on the screen to integrate and interact with the real world scenes through accurate calculation of the positions and angles of camera images.

MR: Mixed Reality (abbreviated to ‘MR’) is the merge of the real world and the virtual world, thereby producing a new environment and visualisation, in which physical and virtual objects co-exist and interact in real time; objects that are not existing in the real world can also be simulated. It is a technology that mixes reality and virtuality and at the same time augments reality and virtual reality to produce a new virtual reality.

Things that you can experience include the following:

1. Learn astronomical knowledge by MR technology. With “Galaxy” as the theme, use the Hololen device to view the merge of virtual animations and real space; thus, the abstract concepts are concretised and the “real” learning environment is created to allow learners to simulate the experience and feeling of being personally on the scene.

2. VR+AR interactive books

When a user aims his/her mobile phone at a picture of a dinosaur in the book, the AR mobile phone app can make the dinosaur come alive on the screen of the phone immediately. In addition, a user may also wear VR glasses to experience a better sense of three dimensionality.

3. Getting start to experience the production of VR effects

Having recorded a video in a real-world environment with a panoramic camera (Image 3), then by using VR equipment (Image 4) and a mobile phone embedded in it (Image 5), users can experience a sense of three dimensionality through the VR technology as if they were placed in a realistic environment. Teaching staff can produce simple VR teaching materials using these instruments to enable students to experience objects and environments that are unreachable in the reality; thus, learning can be full of fun and extended.
